What is the Sāmaveda? The Supreme Musical Veda
The Sāmaveda Saṁhitā holds a paramount position in the Vedic canonical corpus as the supreme manifestation of sacred music, breath (prāṇa), and celestial chant. While the Ṛgveda provides the metrical poetry (ṛc) and the Yajurveda articulates the sacrificial procedures (yajus), the Sāmaveda breathes transcendental life into the verses by transmuting them into melody (sāman).
In the Chāndogya Upaniṣad, the primordial synthesis is celebrated as the sacred union of Speech (Vāc) and Breath (Prāṇa): 'ṛk ca vāva sāma ca' (The verse is Speech, and the melody is Breath; they unite in the sacred Udgītha). So exalted is its status that in the Bhagavad Gītā (10.22), Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa proclaims: 'vedānāṁ sāmavedo'smi'—'Among all the Vedas, I am the Sāmaveda.'
