Is Bengal Vaiṣṇava devotion best understood as a theology, an aesthetics, or a practice of place?

Bengal Vaiṣṇavism is usually approached through its theology or its history. This project follows a different thread: how devotion becomes perceptible. It brings together an ethnographic account of how devotees in the Navadvīp–Māyāpur sacred complex experience place and divinity through body and sense, a critical study of Śrī Caitanya as a reader of Sanskrit poetics, and devotional verse in translation. The aim is to let a reader move between three registers, which are the sacredness of a place, the feeling cultivated in the body, and the formal rules by which devotional poetry is judged, and to see how each shapes the others. It is not a history of the movement or a doctrinal survey. Scope: Poorvam’s own publications, talks and translations on Bengal Vaiṣṇava devotion and its poetics.
