English Scholarly Translation
O beautiful one adorned with clusters of mandāra flowers! May my soul — whose
sense-faculties are its feet — immersing itself in this foot of yours which gives the poor ceaselessly
prosperity matching their hopes and profusely scatters the nectar of clusters of beauty, attain the
state of having six feet (become a bee).
व्याख्या / Traditional Commentary & Notes Classical Exegesis
【Title: A Prayer to Be a Bee at the Feet】 The verse pivots on a double pun: caraṇa means both "foot" and "verse/stanza" (and by extension "means of moving"), while ṣaṭ-caraṇa means both "six-footed" (= a bee, which has six legs) and "having six caraṇas" (in prosody, a six-footed metre). The soul (jīva) whose sense-organs are its feet (karaṇa-caraṇa — the faculties by which it navigates existence) prays to become a bee — to give up the multifarious human way of moving through life and become instead a single-minded honey-drinking insect at the Goddess's flower-feet. The mandāra flowers adorn the foot, making it the perfect bee-habitat.
