English Scholarly Translation
We declare our salutation to this pair of your feet — pleasing to the eyes,
brilliantly adorned with beautiful lac-dye — [a pair] toward which Paśupati (Śiva), lord of animals,
says the aśoka tree in the pleasure-garden is extremely jealous and desires to strike [your feet]
against it.
व्याख्या / Traditional Commentary & Notes Classical Exegesis
【Title: Homage to the Feet — The Aśoka Tree's Jealousy】 The aśoka tree (Saraca asoca) is said in classical poetry to bloom when struck by the foot of a beautiful woman — the convention is called aśoka-dohada (the aśoka's craving). The verse turns this convention inside out: the aśoka tree is jealous of the Goddess's feet and wants to be struck by them (abhihanana). Paśupati relays this information to the Goddess, acting as a tender intermediary between the natural world and his wife. Kaṅkeli is another name for the aśoka; pramadavana is the pleasure garden of a royal palace.
