English Scholarly Translation
O Pārvatī! The lord of mountains (Himālaya), having cut off his heaviness and
expansiveness from his own slopes, deposited them in you in the form of a gift. Therefore this wide and
heavy forward-prominence of your hips overshadows the entire earth and renders it lightweight.
व्याख्या / Traditional Commentary & Notes Classical Exegesis
【Title: The Hips — Bearing Himālaya's Transferred Weight】 Haraṇa-rūpa (in the form of a taking/gift) is a legal term used in inheritance and gift law — Himālaya has "transferred" his mountains' gravitational weight and expansiveness to the Goddess's hips as a kind of dowry or patrimonial gift. The verse plays on gurutva (heaviness / importance / greatness — the same word) and vistāra (expansiveness / width): Himālaya's mountains have both these qualities, which the Goddess has received for her hips. The payoff is comic and philosophical: her hips are now heavier than the mountains that once held all that weight, and they "overshadow the entire earth." The earth is rendered laghu (light) by comparison — a cosmic inversion.
