English Scholarly Translation
O daughter of the mountain-king! Your curved pair of eyelid-edges — for whom does it not create
eagerness about Kāma's flower-arrow and bow? Wherein the oblique glance, gleaming sideways and crossing
the path toward the ear, bestows the intelligence of arrow-nocking [the awareness of being aimed
at].
व्याख्या / Traditional Commentary & Notes Classical Exegesis
【Title: The Eyelids as Kāma's Bowstring】 Pālī refers to the line of the eyelid's edge, particularly where the eyelashes grow in a row. The curved shape (arāla) of this line mimics a bow. Apāṅga is the outer corner of the eye — the point where the eyelid angle creates a sharp or oblique line. This is the classic erotic feature (kaṭākṣa = apāṅga-dṛṣṭi) in Sanskrit poetry: the sideward glance from the outer eye-corner is Kāma's arrow already nocked (śara-saṃdhāna). The phrase śravaṇa-patham ullaṅghya (crossing the path to the ear) recapitulates verse 52's image of the elongated eye reaching the ear — but here it describes the sidelong glance's motion across the face.
