English Scholarly Translation
May your parting-line — like a channel bearing the overflow-stream of the wave of your facial beauty —
extend well-being to us; it bears vermilion that is like the rays of the young sun, made captive by the
massed darkness of your heavy, braided hair.
व्याख्या / Traditional Commentary & Notes Classical Exegesis
【Title: The Vermilion Parting of the Hair】 This verse demonstrates the Saundaryalaharī's mastery of the dīrgha-samāsa (extended compound). The central image rests on two interlinked long compounds: vadana-saundarya-laharī-parīvāha-srotaḥ-saraṇiḥ (a six-member ṣaṣṭhī-tatpuruṣa) and prabala-kabarī-bhāra-timira-dviṣām (a four-member compound). The metre is śikharinī (six lines of 17 syllables each, scanning — — ∪ — — ∪ ∪ ∪ ∪ ∪ — — ∪ — — | ∪ —), and the long compounds fill the slow, majestic rhythm perfectly.
