English Scholarly Translation
Waving a lamp's flame before the sun as a rite of honoring; preparing the
arghya offering to the moon using drops of moonstone-water; pleasing the ocean with its own waters — O
Mother! Such is this praise of yours in words: a hymn of your speech, offered to you, in your own
words.
व्याख्या / Traditional Commentary & Notes Classical Exegesis
【Title: The Final Verse — Offering the Ocean Its Own Water】 The verse deploys three images of a logical paradox: (1) waving a lamp's flame before the sun as a nīrājana (ārati) — the lamp gives no new light to the sun; (2) offering moonstone-water to the moon — moonstone liquefies under the moon's light, so one offers the moon its own product back; (3) pleasing the ocean with its own water. In all three cases, the offering is drawn from the source, offered back to the source, and adds nothing the source does not already have. The hymn is the same: the Goddess of speech (vāk) is being praised in words (vāg-bhiḥ) that she herself bestowed. The poet offers her speech back to Speech.
