Editorial Synopsis & Critical Overview

Words, once written, never return to the pen.

Never Returned to Pen is Rik Amrit's first English collection — poems mined and translated from three earlier Bengali volumes (College Streeter Chaplin, 2018; Bhasa Bicharok Jar, 2023; Katha Diye Sajano, 2025) and reimagined for a new readership across languages.

Moving through five movements — Displacement, Awakening, Creation, Reckoning, and a final Departure — the collection traces a restless arc: the wound of the city (Kolkata's tram lines, crowded local trains, crumbling colonial facades), the awakening of political and national consciousness, the poet's own struggle with voice and authenticity, and the long reckoning with love, loss, and memory that follows.

Threading through the book is the central image of its title: ink, once it leaves the pen, cannot return — just as Krishna never returned to Gokula, just as a mind once expanded cannot shrink back to a point. Amrit writes in that expanding space, drawing on Bengali folk tradition, Vaishnava poetics, and the textures of everyday urban and rural Bengal, while confronting distinctly contemporary anxieties — media culture, political polarisation, the commodification of authenticity.

With a foreword by Prof. L. V. Shanthakumari and a glossary of cultural and historical references, Never Returned to Pen is both an intimate archive of one poet's earlier selves and an invitation for English readers into a Bengali literary sensibility rarely translated on its own terms.

"Am I catering to the market? Perhaps. But I believe literature should befriend its readers rather than alienate them, especially in our fractured age." — from the Preface
