2 publicationsYāska and the Birth of Vedic Hermeneutics (Part I)
This essay introduces Yāska, the earliest known systematiser of Vedic etymology, and his foundational text, the Nirukta. It traces his place among the six Vedāṅgas, his tripartite method of reading mantras across the ādhibhautika, ādhidaivika, and ādhyātmika planes, and his five-step interpretive formula of meaning, synonym, etymology, count, and resolution of doubt. The piece closes with Yāska's confrontation with the sceptic Kautsa, whose claim that the mantras were meaningless prompted one of India's earliest recorded defences of scriptural hermeneutics
