Swami Medhananda — monk of the Ramakrishna Order, Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at the Vedanta Society of Southern California, and Hindu Chaplain at UCLA and USC — discusses his acclaimed book Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality: Sri Ramakrishna and Cross-Cultural Philosophy of Religion (Oxford University Press, 2018) in a wide-ranging conversation on his philosophical reconstruction of Sri Ramakrishna's thought as "Vijnana Vedanta."
Drawing on the Kathamrita and Sri Ramakrishna's own words, Swami Medhananda argues that Sri Ramakrishna taught a non-sectarian, integral Advaita that goes beyond Shankara's classical Advaita Vedanta — one in which Brahman and Shakti, the impersonal and the personal, the formless and the formed, are equally real. The conversation covers his three interpretive approaches to Ramakrishna scholarship (sectarian, "incoherent mystic," and non-sectarian), his five hermeneutic principles for reading the Kathamrita, the concepts of Jnana, Vijnana and Bhava Mukha, Holy Mother Sarada Devi's statement "Thakur is Advaita," religious pluralism versus religious inclusivism, his ongoing "Integral Advaita trilogy" (on Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and Sri Aurobindo), and his exchange with historian Peter Heehs on Sri Aurobindo's debt to Sri Ramakrishna.
The session concludes with an extended Q&A covering hermeneutics and rigour in Indology, the paraconsistent-God debate with Benedict Paul Göcke, the distinction between Bhava Samadhi, Bhava Mukha and Vijnana, and whether the realisation of Vijnana is restricted to Ishvarakotis.

Swami Medhananda is the author of Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality (2018), Swami Vivekananda's Vedantic Cosmopolitanism (2022), and the forthcoming An All-Embracing Oneness: Sri Aurobindo's Integral Advaita and the Legacy of Sri Ramakrishna. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley and has lectured at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Oxford.
