Abstract

Flame retardants are widely used chemicals added to consumer products to reduce fire risk, but many are persistent organic pollutants that accumulate in our environments. Growing evidence suggests that some of these substances can disrupt the functions of the hormone (endocrine) system in the body, potentially linking them to a range of adverse health effects, including breast cancer. Many halogenated flame retardants that were commonly used are now being restricted, but there are emerging concerns around the suitability of their replacements, organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs). Overall, whilst further research is warranted, stronger policy action is needed to protect individuals and communities from unnecessary exposure to flame retardants of concern.
