Abstract
<jats:p>During the existence of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic from 1918 to 1920, particular importance was attached to restructuring the education system on national foundations. The measures implemented by the government were aimed at expanding instruction in the Azerbaijani language, developing the school network, and training qualified teachers. The opening of the Gazakh Teachers’ Seminary, the establishment of Baku State University, and the state -funded education of Azerbaijani students at foreign universi ties were among the major achievements of this policy. The organization of education on secular, national, and modern principles contributed to the enlightenment of society and created favourable conditions for the training of local specialists. The measur es implemented by the Republic during its short period of existence had a significant impact on the formation of Azerbaijan’s national education system. The educational policy of this period is regarded as an important stage in the history of pedagogical t hought and the development of statehood traditions in Azerbaijan.</jats:p>
