Abstract
<jats:p>To study the impact of project-based learning on the educational process in a secondary school natural science lesson. Materials and Methods: Project-based learning was introduced as an experiment for fifth-grade students during the second quarter of the 2024-25 academic year at K. Eshimbekov Secondary School in Tegizchil village, Ak-Suu district, Issyk-Kul region, Kyrgyzstan. Results and discussion: As part of this project, students studied the ecological status of animals listed in the Red Book of Ak-Suu district and ways to conserve them. Based on the collected information, habitat, threats, poaching (hunting), and conservation measures were identified. Effective ways to conserve the region's biodiversity were proposed. The authors developed project evaluation criteria. The use of project-based learning in fifth-grade natural science lessons significantly increased interest in the subject, with student engagement and academic performance increasing by 20% over the previous quarter. Small projects can be incorporated into natural science teaching methods in rural schools.</jats:p>
