<jats:p>This article examines how nineteenth-century English-language literature gives artistic form to childhood loneliness, drawing on the works of Lewis Carroll and Mark Twain. It considers the historical and cultural preconditions for a new concept of childhood that took shape under the influence of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, and traces how that concept is refracted in the figures of Alice, Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn. The article argues that loneliness in both writers reaches well beyond social commentary and becomes a way of exploring how a child's personality and sense of identity take shape.</jats:p>
