Geopolitical Contestation in Asia

<jats:p>Asia is not a neutral backdrop for urban governance. It is one of the most geopolitically contested regions in the world, shaped by cross-strait tensions, South China Sea disputes, strategic competition among major and middle powers, and the shifting alignments of state and non-state actors across the Indo-Pacific. This chapter examines how these regional dynamics create the conditions under which Urban Cyfluence operates. It traces how geopolitical rivalry increasingly finds expression not only through military posturing or economic coercion, but through the manipulation of information environments, the exploitation of infrastructure dependencies, and targeted pressure on urban governance systems. The chapter argues that dominant metropolitan centers — capital cities and major economic hubs — carry disproportionate political and symbolic weight, making them high-value targets whose disruption can cascade well beyond the municipal scale. It also challenges the assumption that foreign and domestic information disorder are clearly separable phenomena, showing how external actors often amplify pre-existing domestic tensions while domestic actors adopt methods associated with foreign influence operations. Understanding Asia's geopolitical landscape is therefore not a background exercise: it is essential to understanding why Urban Cyfluence takes the forms it does across the region.</jats:p>
