<jats:p>This article analyses the subjective-quantity function of the Mandarin elements 才 (cái) and 就 (jiù). According to the category of subjective quantity (主观量) introduced by Chen Xiaohe, beyond the objective value of a quantity a speaker may also express an evaluation of it as greater or smaller than a norm. It is shown that 才 chiefly expresses subjectively small quantity (a quantity below expectation) and, depending on position and construction, also subjectively large quantity; 就 expresses subjectively small quantity in the sufficiency construction and subjectively large quantity in the «large result easily achieved» construction. In both cases the underlying mechanism is the positioning of the actual quantity relative to the expected one. The findings are related to translation equivalence into Uzbek.</jats:p>
