Abstract

Truth has been an object of philosophical reflection for thinkers since ancient times. The ancient Greeks believed that truth is born in debate. The Sophists preferred victory in debate to truth. Francis Bacon distinguished between secular and religious truth, a position that helps to defuse the tension between believers and non-believers. Religious truth is attained through faith, personal experience, and revelation, unlike scientific truth, which is based on empirical data and observation. For a believer, religious truth is absolute, above doubt and speculation.
