Abstract

This article comparatively examines the linguopragmatic features of children’s discourse in Gafur Gulom’s novella “Shum bola” and its English translation “Naughty boy.” The corpus comprises 54 pragmatic units classified as forms of address, nicknames, interjections and emotional units, dialogic constructions, humorous devices, and psychological units. Comparative, discourse-pragmatic, contextual, and basic quantitative methods are used to identify translation strategies and their communicative effects. The findings show that equivalent translation generally preserves the simplicity, spontaneity, and emotionality of children’s speech, whereas adaptation and generalization improve accessibility for English readers but may weaken national, religious, and social connotations. The main pragmatic effect is retained in nicknames, humorous episodes, and psychological units; however, culture-specific items such as “xalfana,” “mulla aka,” “domla,” and “boyvachcha” undergo partial pragmatic loss. The study argues that translating children’s literature requires a balance between semantic, pragmatic, and cultural equivalence.
