Abstract

In the contemporary era, characterized by the rapid advancement of information technology and significant changes in people’s daily lifestyles, the responsible and appropriate use of information has become increasingly important for democratic and participatory citizens. Civic participation is now closely intertwined with digital information systems, which process, filter, and prioritize information while tailoring content to individuals. Mass media and the information disseminated through these channels have become the primary sources through which citizens access information. Consequently, the scope of civic education has evolved to include media information literacy (MIL), the ability to critically evaluate misinformation and disinformation, and responsible participation in digital environments. The goals of contemporary civic education therefore extend beyond providing knowledge about governmental structures and institutions; they increasingly emphasize the development of citizens’ values, competencies, and active civic engagement. As the influence of the digital information ecosystem continues to grow, social media platforms driven by specialized algorithms have become key forces shaping public knowledge, perceptions, and civic participation. This trend highlights the growing need for civic education to address the implications of algorithm-driven information environments.
