Abstract

Cutaneous adnexal tumors are a rare and diverse form of skin tumors that encompass both benign neoplasms and aggressive carcinomas. Amongst the adnexal neoplasms, one relatively rare form are cylindromas, accounting for 0.7% of reported cases. In this paper, we present the clinicopathologic features of a cylindroma, presenting as a solitary, slowly enlarging temporal mass, occurring in a 54- year-old male. Cylindromas are typically solitary exophytic, painless tumors, occurring more commonly on the head and neck region of female. Because of its rare occurrence, when the lesion presents as a single mass, located outside of the scalp in a male patient and without familial history, cylindroma is more likely to be mistaken clinically for more common lesions, such as squamous or basal cell carcinoma. Diagnosis based on biopsy and histopathologic findings expedites a simple excisional therapeutic approach and is helpful in ruling out the clinical impression of a malignant neoplasm.
