Abstract
NAC provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission. Consider it for body-focused repetitive behaviors, where evidence is meaningful. NAC demonstrated a 56% response rate versus 16% on placebo in adults with trichotillomania, making it a first-line consideration. Titrate to 1200 mg twice daily over nine weeks. For excoriation disorder, increase NAC to 3000 mg/day over six weeks. It reduces picking urges and cravings rather than improving behavioral control.
