Abstract

Do not view cardiovascular disease as an absolute contraindication for ADHD pharmacotherapy. Current evidence indicates that serious risks are rare and typically outweighed by the benefits. Lisdexamfetamine cohort data suggest little or no increased cardiovascular risk compared to other ADHD medications. Treat its safety profile as similar to other stimulants. Among older adults starting ADHD medications, concentrate vigilance in the first 30 days. The risk of cardiovascular events may peak early and then attenuate.
