Abstract

Higher soft drink intake was associated with MDD diagnosis and greater symptom severity. This effect was significant in women but not in men. Gut microbiome changes—particularly increased Eggerthella—may partially mediate the soft drink-depression link in women. Beverage intake represents a potentially modifiable factor worth addressing when counseling patients with depression.
