Abstract
<jats:p>This analysis synthesizes peer-reviewed life cycle assessment (LCA) data across fermentation ingredient categories—biomass proteins, precision fermentation proteins, and microbial oils—and compares their environmental footprints to conventional animal-derived counterparts, highlighting their environmental benefits and policy recommendations. Fermentation-derived food ingredients can be produced at a fraction of the climate, land, water, and pollution costs of conventional animal-derived alternatives–while matching their nutritional and functional performance. As protein consumption grows worldwide, fermentation offers an efficient, scalable route to reducing the environmental impacts of food production. A systematic review of life cycle assessment (LCA) evidence conducted by the Good Food Institute, synthesizing findings from over 30 peer-reviewed and industry publications, confirms these advantages across three fermentation pathways: biomass fermentation, precision fermentation proteins, and microbial oils. Environmental advantages of fermentation-derived ingredients—including lower greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water use—prevail across a range of inputs and production methods. These benefits are real but not automatic. Investments and policy action in next-generation feedstocks, production infrastructure, and renewable energy can simultaneously lower both costs and environmental impacts. </jats:p>
