Abstract
This Behavioral Diagnostics Toolkit is a practical, plug-and-play resource designed for product managers, product innovation teams, and distribution channel managers working in inclusive insurance. It provides a structured, step-by-step workflow for diagnosing why target behaviors are or are not occurring across the insurance value chain, and for translating that diagnosis into concrete, testable intervention designs. The toolkit is NOT a theoretical behavioral science manual, a full product development process, or a replacement for human-centered design (HCD). Instead, it is designed to complement and deepen HCD approaches by adding behavioral rigor to the diagnosis phase before solutions are designed. As Michie et al. (2011) argue, interventions designed without a preceding behavioral diagnosis are unlikely to target the right mechanisms and are therefore likely to underperform or fail. Each section of the toolkit contains: a conceptual framework explaining the purpose and theoretical grounding of the step; a practical worksheet that a team can complete in a facilitated session; and a worked example using a generic inclusive insurance case study that you can simply use by substituting the specific risk event and seasonal/cyclical pattern relevant to your context to illustrate what a completed worksheet looks like.
