Abstract

The liver is one of the most vital organs of the human body, serving as the central hub for metabolism, detoxification, digestion, and the maintenance of physiological homeostasis. The rising global burden of liver disorders—including Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma—poses significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. Despite remarkable advances in diagnostic modalities and therapeutic interventions, the increasing prevalence of chronic liver diseases highlights the need for comprehensive, patient-centered, and integrative approaches to liver health. Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, offers a profound understanding of liver physiology and pathology through the concepts of Yakrit, Ranjaka Pitta, Rakta, Meda, Agni, Ama, and Srotas. Rather than viewing liver disorders merely as isolated pathological entities, Ayurveda interprets them as manifestations of systemic imbalances involving Dosha, Dushya, Agni, and Srotodushti. This holistic perspective emphasizes individualized treatment, restoration of metabolic balance, detoxification, dietary regulation, lifestyle modification, and rejuvenation, making it highly relevant in the contemporary era of chronic metabolic diseases. Ayurvedic Hepatology in Clinical Practice: An Integrative Disease-Based Approach has been conceived to bridge the rich principles of classical Ayurveda and modern hepatology. Unlike conventional texts that discuss diseases exclusively from either a traditional or biomedical perspective, this book adopts a disease-based integrative framework. Each liver disorder is systematically explored through contemporary scientific understanding alongside Ayurvedic principles, enabling readers to appreciate the complementary strengths of both systems of medicine. The chapters of this book provide a systematic and integrative overview of hepatology, beginning with the anatomy and physiology of the liver from both Ayurvedic and modern perspectives. The book comprehensively covers major liver disorders—including hepatitis, MASLD, chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, alcohol-induced liver disease, and hepatobiliary cancers—while correlating contemporary medical concepts with Ayurvedic principles. It further highlights evidence-based Ayurvedic therapeutics, the role of Panchakarma, and the importance of Pathya–Apathya (diet and lifestyle) in the holistic management of liver diseases. This book serves as a practical reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Ayurveda, physicians, academicians, and researchers interested in Yakrut Vikara (Liver Diseases). It presents the subject in a concise and clinically relevant manner by integrating classical Ayurvedic principles with contemporary medical science. The practice of integrative hepatology is not merely about combining two medical systems; it is about leveraging the strengths of each to provide safe, rational, individualized, and patient-centered care. As the global healthcare community increasingly recognizes the importance of personalized and holistic medicine, Ayurveda plays a key role in the prevention, management, and long-term care of liver diseases. We hope this book contributes to advancing evidence-based integrative hepatology and inspires clinicians, researchers, and students to explore the synergistic potential of Ayurveda and modern medicine. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the authors, the scientific community, our teachers, colleagues, and students, whose knowledge, guidance, and experiences have enriched this work. We are especially grateful to our patients, whose trust, experiences, and healing journeys continue to inspire our pursuit of excellence in clinical practice and research. We sincerely hope that this book serves as a valuable clinical and academic resource, fostering a deeper understanding of integrative hepatology and inspiring continued excellence in the science, research, and practice of Ayurvedic liver care.
