Abstract
this article covers the military actions between the French and imperial armies on the Rhine in 1705 during the Spanish Succession War (1701-1714). The article aims to identify the characteristic features of Western European military art of the early 18th century. Its scientific novelty lies in the fact that the work, based on material previously unrecognized in Russian historiography, reveals the strengths and weaknesses of Western European military art. Using a single military campaign as an example, it demonstrates the limitations of operational plans, the difficulties of managing multinational coalition forces, the passivity and constraining method of military operations, and a preoccupation with positional warfare and maneuvering. The study establishes that in the 1705 military campaign on the Rhine, the imperial army was characterized by indecisiveness, an inability to exploit its superiority over the enemy, and a preference for defensive methods over field combat as a method of influencing the enemy. Conversely, the commander of the French army, Marshal Villard, waged an active defense, constantly counterattacking the more numerous enemy, and attempting to reduce military operations to a field battle. During the 1705 campaign, signs of attrition became increasingly evident. The devastation of enemy territory and the maintenance of the army at the enemy's expense became a typical feature of military affairs of the era.
