Abstract

This chapter presents a clinically grounded perspective on animal behavior by examining how disease states influence the interplay between instinctive responses and elements of consciousness in companion animals. While instinct is traditionally viewed as an innate and automatic behavioral driver, clinical observations increasingly reveal adaptive, context-dependent responses that suggest varying degrees of awareness, learning, and decision-making. Drawing on veterinary practice, the chapter explores how conditions such as pain, systemic illness, neurological disorders, and stress-related diseases shape behavioral expression. These manifestations often extend beyond instinctive reactions, indicating higher-order processing and conscious adaptation. By integrating behavioral theory with clinical evidence, this chapter offers a translational framework for interpreting behavior as both a diagnostic indicator and a reflection of underlying physiological and neurological states, aligning closely with contemporary perspectives on animal cognition and welfare.
