Abstract

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory incurable disease of unknown cause. For a long time it was considered exclusively a skin disease. However, research has shown that certain diseases appear more often in psoriasis patients than in the general population. There are numerous associated diseases, i.e. comorbidities such as psoriatic arthritis, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, dyslipidemia, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease, psychiatric comorbidities, uveitis, neurological diseases, malignant diseases, but also many other comorbidities. The exact mechanicms of the association between psoriasis and associated diseases have not been fully explained, but it is belived that the state of chronic inflammation, genetic connection and lifestyle play a role in the occurrence of comorbidities, and further research into these mechanisms is certainly needed. Also, do not consider the comorbidities disccovered so far as definitive, but keep in mind the possibility of discovering new comorbidities. Given that there is a large number of possible associated diseases, and often more than one is present, this places an addtional burden on patients with psoriasis. It is very important to understand that patients with psoriasis may have comorbidities, and to carry out timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment of associated diseases if they already exist.
