Abstract

Image or furniture? Sign or object? Renaissance Intarsia cannot be clearly categorized and instead create hallucinatory spaces in which ontological distinctions are impossible. Material, function, production and depiction are inextricably intertwined here and create a visual language unique to the medium. The countless trompe-l'œils question a logic of representation based on imitation and instead expose an excessive, exuberant and rampant mimesis. This study approaches the thoroughly hybrid object of wood marquetry with the help of different disciplinary perspectives and provides a media-materialistic and cultural-techniques-based analysis.
