Abstract

The book documents the history of the Jewish department store group “M. Conitzer & Söhne”, which ran department stores in over thirty German cities until the National Socialists seized power and which fell into oblivion after the end of the Second World War. It traces the history of individual department stores, their Aryanization and the long road to restitution. Biographies of successful family members and the economic networking of individual locations are documented. By means of examples, the destruction of the group that began with the seizure of power, the plundering of private assets as well as the expulsion and murder of all family members are illustrated.
