Abstract
<p>The form, function, and meaning of the passive construction consisting of “gehören” and a past participle unfold in a contextual reading that focuses on its deontic modality. In contrast to previous studies, the author pays special attention to data-based research of the construction using tens of thousands of examples from the Austrian Media Corpus, a print media corpus that reflects standard (written) German in Austria. Even in this variety, the examples are characterized by orality, which shifts the phenomenon towards spoken language. Claudia Mattes combines research on grammaticalization and corpus linguistics, with a focus on digital methods.</p>
