What is our stance on religion? – The digital revolution and its dashed hopes for a freer, more equal and more united world are now being followed by a counter-revolution based on faith in a beneficial AI. We live under the hegemony of a digital restoration that seeks solace in an unorthodox spirituality. Judged against our religious heritage, however, the promises of salvation offered today appear more like poor metaphysics. What is therefore needed is a religious Enlightenment that will not be fobbed off with cheap idols. Should a deus ex machina appear on the world stage today, it would in any case be more likely to do so in the dominant medium of our time: in games. For the religion of the digital age, too, the saying holds true: to every god his medium, and to every medium its god.
