ԱՌԱՋԻՆ ԱՇԽԱՐՀԱՄԱՐՏԻ ՏԱՐԻՆԵՐԻ ՀԱՅ ԳԱՂԹԱԿԱՆՈՒԹՅԱՆ ՊԱՏՄՈՒԹՅՈՒՆՆ ԱՄԲՈՂՋԱՑՆՈՂ ԱՐԺԵՔԱՎՈՐ ՀՐԱՏԱՐԱԿՈՒԹՅՈՒՆ

<jats:p>SUMMARY This article is a detailed scholarly review of a monograph by the renowned historian Professor Avetis Harutyunyan, which examines one of the most tragic and understudied chapters in the Armenian history: the plight of Armenian refugees during World War I and the salvific mission of the Armenian Apostolic Church. This review analyzes the structure and extensive source base of the monograph, which draws on archival materials from Armenia, Georgia, Russia, and the United Kingdom, many of which are being introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time. The review examines the book’s key conceptual premises: historical retrospective of the forced deportations of the Armenian population, the demographic catastrophe caused by the Armenian Genocide of 1915–1916, as well as the devastating consequences of the Russian army’s sudden retreats on the Caucasus Front (in particular, the July 1915 tragic deportation from Van-Vaspurakan). Particular attention is paid to a critical analysis of the colonial and duplicitous land policy of Tsarist Russia under the slogan “Armenia without Armenians,” a course subsequently maintained by the Russian Provisional Government. The focus of this study is the unprecedented humanitarian, spiritual, cultural, and patriotic activities of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin under the leadership of Catholicos of All Armenians Gevork V, aimed at rescuing, settling, and providing shelter for hundreds of thousands of refugees, as well as evacuating the priceless manuscript and spiritual heritage of Western Armenia. The author of the review emphasizes the high scientific and practical value of the monograph in the context of countering modern Turkish falsifications of history.</jats:p>
