Abstract

SUMMARY This article explores the relationship between the military values of the Armenian Army and Christian virtues. It begins by examining the theological and philosophical foundations of virtue — from ancient Greek thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle to Church Fathers like Augustine and Thomas Aquinas — establishing that virtue is both a natural human quality and a divine gift. Christian virtues are divided into theological (faith, hope, and love) and moral (prudence, justice, courage, and temperance), all of which form the foundation of a righteous life. The article then presents the seven core values of the Armenian Army — faith, loyalty, duty, selfless service, honor, integrity, and courage — and demonstrates how each is grounded in the Scripture and Christian moral teaching. It argues that a soldier who internalizes these values not only becomes more professionally capable, but develops the spiritual and moral character necessary for a dignified life and service. The role of military chaplains in nurturing this spiritual dimension is also highlighted, along with the importance of personal example and continuous moral education within the armed forces. The article concludes that military values and Christian virtues are not separate systems but deeply complementary — together shaping soldiers who serve with dedication, responsibility, and unwavering commitment to their homeland, their comrades, and their faith.
