Abstract
Islamic monuments constitute a relatively small component of the cultural heritage of the Syunik region. They are primarily represented by tombstones located in Muslim cemeteries, as well as by several Islamic mausoleum-shrines dating to the later historical period. The earliest precisely dated Islamic monuments within the territory of present-day Syunik appear mainly from the second half of the fifteenth century. These monuments are first and foremost represented in the Muslim cemetery of the historical settlement of Vorotn. The earliest Islamic tombstones in the cemetery of Vorotn belonged to Armenians who had converted to Islam. This article examines the historical and chronological context surrounding the emergence of Islamic monuments within the territory of the Syunik region.
