Abstract
The official register of monuments on the territory of the Republic of Artsakh comprises over 4,000 sites, of which approximately one percent are Islamic monuments, including mosques, mausoleums, and cemeteries. A significant part of these monuments dates to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, while the remainder date back to the fourteenth-seventeenth centuries. Isolated examples from the eighteenth century are also documented. The earliest Islamic monuments in Artsakh, identified as mausoleums, appear from the late thirteenth century. These mausoleums have received limited scholarly attention, and the paucity of historical sources hinders efforts to determine not only their patrons but also the broader historical and cultural contexts of their construction. Moreover, Azerbaijani researchers who engaged with this subject during the Soviet era demonstrably sought to distort the historical and cultural framework surrounding the emergence of these monuments. This article discusses the historical and chronological context of the emergence of Islamic monuments in Artsakh.
