Two Hoards from Southwestern Crimea, Containing “Limes” Denarii and Antoniniani

<jats:p>The article discusses two hoards of Roman coins from southwestern Crimea, now held in the State Historical Museum of the Southern Urals (Chelyabinsk). They were acquired by the well-known archaeologist N. K. Minko during his excavations near the village of Burlyuk in Simferopol district in 1909—1911. The first hoard, consisting of 351 denarii from Nero to Maximinus I, represents either part of a garrison treasury or a payment made to a federate. It was brought to Taurica by a unit redeployed from Lower Moesia; its deposition is dated to AD 236. The second hoard contains 15 antoniniani from Julia Domna to Trajan Decius and is associated with the Roman military presence in Taurica after AD 251. Both hoards include silvered bronze “limes” coins (limesfalsae), cast or struck in workshops on the Moesian limes for payments to the army.</jats:p>
