Abstract

Depression is considered the result of dysfunction in widely distributed neuronal networks, in which the limbic and autonomic regulatory systems play a key role. The central components of this system are the amygdaloid complex, the hypothalamus, and the nucleus of the solitary tract (Nucleus tractus solitarius), which together form the functional NTS–amygdala–hypothalamus network. In depressive states, this network exhibits an imbalance in neuronal activity, manifested by impaired emotional reactivity in the amygdala, dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, and weakened integration of visceral signals within the NTS. As a result, the coordinated regulation of emotional and autonomic responses is disrupted.
