Abstract
Glucocorticoids are widely used in oncology as components of chemotherapy regimens and supportive care; however, their use may lead to the development of glucocorticoid-associated hyperglycemia, which can adversely affect the outcomes of anticancer treatment. This literature review aimed to summarize the prevalence, risk factors, early diagnostic strategies, and current management approaches for glucocorticoid-associated hyperglycemia in oncology patients without previously diagnosed diabetes mellitus. A literature search was conducted using the PubMed/MEDLINE database and included systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical practice guidelines, and observational studies. The available evidence indicates that glucocorticoid-associated hyperglycemia is a common but frequently underrecognized complication. Major risk factors include older age, increased body mass index, elevated HbA1c, pre-existing abnormalities of glucose metabolism, and intensive glucocorticoid therapy.
