<jats:p>The Western Armenian satirical writers have occupied a worthy niche in Armenian literature playing an undeniable role in its development. However, many of them, despite their merits, remain almost unknown to the Armenian reader and unjustly forgotten. One of them is Yervand Tolayan (1883‒1937), a writer, editor and actor, who gained fame in the Armenian cultural life of Constantinople at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1910, his main work, the satirical novel "In the Footsteps of the Ideal" was published; the novel presented the life and customs of the Armenians of Constantinople, particularly of the district Bera, in a bright satirical subtext. Tolayan's satirical novel, as well as his short prose works, in addition to other merits, stand out for their beautiful and figurative language, which is greatly facilitated by the abundance of figurative linguistic means and their correct and appropriate use. Metaphors, comparisons, contrasts, etc. enriching the lingual and stylistic outline of the work with various nuances, gave the narrative an allegorical meaning, and a satirical character. Words belonging to various layers of the vocabulary, including foreign words, have great satirical potential. Standing out in the verbal environment, these lexical units contribute to a deeper understanding of the object or phenomenon being described, its certain properties, as well as its comic nature. Pauses and punctuation marks also deserve attention, reinforcing the subtext and lending the work a unique imagery.</jats:p>
