Abstract

<jats:p>Theoretically, the possibility of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cell with homeotropic and periodic orientation boundary conditions diffracting a light beam has been investigated. To ensure a continuous helical structure, a small amount of cholesteric liquid crystal must be added to the NLC. Unlike known polarisation gratings, the zero-order and ± 1 orders diffractive efficiencies of this cell can be controlled by external electric or magnetic fields. With homotropic and periodic orientation boundary conditions, the unique polarisation properties of the NLC cell can be used to develop a real-time photopolarimeter and a circular dichroism spectrograph.</jats:p>
