Abstract

<jats:p>Research in the synthesis of high-purity materials has shown that zinc and zirconium silicate nanopowders doped with cerium can be used as pigments for solar reflectors on spacecraft. This raises the question of their radiation resistance. The hydrothermal-microwave synthesis of pure and cerium-doped zinc and zirconium silicates is described. The elemental composition of the materials was determined using instrumental neutron activation analysis. The results of modeling the radiation effects on modified composite temperature-control coatings of zinc orthosilicate (willemite) and zirconium silicate doped with cerium (Zn2SiO4:Ce and ZrSiO4:Ce) are presented. The theoretical prediction of power-law dependence for the energy spectrum of atoms (ions) that have acquired excess kinetic energy agrees with the modeling results when only Coulomb scattering under radiation exposure is taken into account. The simulation yielded the probabilities of defect formation in crystals. Protons are the most damaging to crystals. Electrons are 4–7 times weaker, and neutrons are more than 70 times weaker. The simulation program is based on the GEANT4.11 package.</jats:p>
