Abstract
Introduction / Problem. Authenticity is regarded as one of the key factors of psychological well-being; however, its relationship with cultural context, particularly in comparative research, remains insufficiently explored. Despite growing interest in the cross-cultural aspects of authenticity, the mechanisms through which it manifests itself in different cultural environments have been studied only fragmentarily. Objective. The aim of the study was to identify cross-cultural differences in the level and components of authenticity among participants from Russia and Uzbekistan, as well as to examine its associations with perceived cultural types within G. Triandis’s model of horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism. Methods. The study involved 149 respondents aged 18–35 years (M = 23.4; SD = 4.1), including 74 participants from Russia and 75 from Uzbekistan. The following instruments were used: the Moscow Authenticity Scale, the short version of the Kernis–Goldman Authenticity Inventory, and the Perceived Community Culture Assessment Method. Data were analyzed within a comparative cross-cultural design. Results. The Russian sample demonstrated higher levels of overall authenticity and its components, including awareness, behavior, and relational orientation. Horizontal individualism showed consistent positive associations with all aspects of authenticity. Horizontal collectivism was also positively associated with overall authenticity, awareness, and relational orientation. Vertical collectivism demonstrated negative associations, whereas vertical individualism showed no statistically significant associations. Conclusions. The findings suggest that authenticity is not an exclusively individualistic phenomenon and may also manifest under conditions of egalitarian collectivism. Cultural context has a differentiated influence on the components of authenticity, affecting interpersonal aspects to a greater extent. The study clarifies the conditions of authentic self-expression in different sociocultural environments and provides a basis for further cross-cultural research on authenticity.
