Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify potential sources of catechins among the felling residues of seasonal pruning of individual woody and shrubby forms of medicinal plants of the Rosaceae family. The objects of the study were buds and young lignified shoots of Aronia melanocarpa Elliot., Crataegus monogyna Jacq., Rosa spinosissima L., Rosa canina L. and Rosa cinnamomea L., harvested as a result of planned autumn pruning of tree crowns and shrubs. The conducted studies allowed us to establish that the content of the amount of reduced flavonoids calculated on catechin in the studied raw material samples ranges from 14.4 to 25.3 % (for buds) and from 7.3 to 20.7 % (for lignified shoots). The highest amount of reduced flavonoids in terms of catechin was found in the buds of Rosa cinnamomea L. (25.29 ± 1.26 %). It has been shown that the lignified shoots and buds of the studied medicinal plant species can serve as promising sources of catechin for the medical and pharmaceutical industries. The results we have obtained can serve as a basis for creating waste-free production schemes for domestic HM based on resource-saving technologies.
