Abstract

The life of the first Armenian woman novelist, Srpouhi Dussap (1841–1901), has been extensively studied. However, a recent examination of the Dussap family tree published on the genealogy website Geneanet (https://en.geneanet.org/) has revealed several additional details concerning Srpouhi Dussap, the family of her husband – the Constantinople-based French pianist and organist Paul Dussap (1836–1922) – and their descendants. In particular, the following previously unknown details have come to light: (a) the novelist’s middle name was Maria; (b) the Dussap surname is believed to have originated in northern France, likely in Normandy, with family members residing in the East since the 18th century; (c) Paul Dus-sap’s grandfather, Georges Dussap (d. 1814), served as head of medical services in Egypt; (d) Paul Dussap was half-Italian through his mother, Dorothea Rossi; (e) their daughter, Do-rine Dussap (1870–1891), had a second Armenian name, Arusyak; (f) she was baptized in a Catholic church, with her godfather being Manuk Allahverdi (a translator of French literature) and her godmother Arusyak Allahverdi – indicating that the child was named after her god-mother; (g) the novelist had one grandson, René Louis Dussap (1906–1984), who died with-out descendants. Although these discoveries may appear minor at first glance, they nonethe-less add valuable new dimensions to the biography of Srpouhi Dussap.
