<jats:p>The Armenian people made a worthy contribution – shoulder to shoulder with all the nations of the USSR – to the victory over the German fascist invaders in the Great Patriot-ic War. Armenian servicemen actively participated in the defensive, crucial turning-point, and final victorious phases of the war, distinguishing themselves in all major engagements and across every branch of the armed forces, including the armored troops. For their valor in battle, they received numerous state decorations; nineteen were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and one became a full Cavalier of the Order of Glory. During the war years, Armenian tank commanders included two corps commanders, five brigade commanders, six regimental commanders, over one hundred battalion and company commanders, six platoon commanders, and one member of a tank army military council. H.Kh. Babajanyan, Hero of the Soviet Union, who commanded a tank brigade and a corps during the war, was promoted to the rank of Chief Marshal of Armored Troops in the postwar period (a title conferred upon only one other person, P.A. Rotmistrov). For more than eight years, Babajanyan served as the Chief of the Armored Forces of the Soviet Army. Throughout the war years, Armenian tankmen consistently upheld the honor of their nation, contributing to this historic victory through their bravery and sacrifices on the battlefield.</jats:p>
