Abstract
Ddmach-arishta, as a traditional bread product, is more than just an element of Armenian subsistence culture. The process of its preparation has been accompanied by a series of integrated intangible values, specifically forms of kinship-neighborhood mutual aid, and expressions of folk oral culture and performing arts. Methods and Materials: The study was conducted using the methodology of historical-ethnographic and ethno-cultural research. Comparative analysis was applied as the primary research method; field ethnographic and folklore materials were compared with information available in professional literature and dictionaries. Analysis: The article discusses the terms arishta and ddmach and their usage according to lexicographical materials, and analyzes the cultural significance of arishta-ddmach within traditional and everyday Armenian culture. Special attention is paid to the preparation process of this bread product and the modern challenges of preserving these customs. Results: Through a comprehensive examination of ddmach-arishta, the preparation process and the associated customs formed over a long historical period have been synthesized. The issues of preserving and re-interpreting the knowledge and traditions related to arishta—as an element of Armenian intangible cultural heritage—have been highlighted. Authors' Contribution: H. Galstyan described the traditional and modern processes of arishta preparation; K. Bazeyan presented it within the context of intangible culture.
