Abstract

Dusheti district had the most sparse and small population in the territory of Eastern Georgia. Climatic conditions, unfavorable agricultural prerequisites and raids by mountaineers over the centuries kept the population away from settling there. Despite its picturesque nature and untapped potential, Dusheti district continued to have a sparse population in the 1920s after the establishment of Soviet power. The Armenian population, unlike other provinces (uezd), had a low proportion, but in some rural communities and the city of Dusheti it was the second national minority after the Georgians. It is noteworthy that in the late 19th and early 20th centuries the number of Armenians gradually began to grow. We conclude that the number of Armenians in the All-Russian Census of 1897 is presented inaccurately, since the statistics were compiled according to religion and knowledge of the native language. We attribute the uncertainty of the data to the difficulties of religious registration and the national policy pursued by Tsarist Russia. According to the data of the All-Union Census of 1926, the number of Armenians increased slightly. The establishment of the Soviet regime implied equality, solidarity, manifestations of coexistence and goodwill among peoples. We attribute the growth in the number of Armenians to the manifestation of the national and good-neighborly policy of the Soviet state. This connection, in our opinion, is also conditioned by the argumentation of the accurate data of the All-Union Census. Methods and materials: There are no studies conducted on the distribution of the population of the given period and province, and access to Georgian sources is limited, therefore we used statistical data and censuses of the mentioned period.
